During some of the time Elkus is not working, he likes to go into other stores to check out merchandise and customer service. Occasionally, he plays golf with longtime customers. He’s been a member of Congregation Beth Shalom for 59 years — “I started their morning services and their bingo events,” he says — and he volunteers at the Fleischman Residence Nosh Nook at lunchtime, making tuna fish and egg salad sandwiches. Elkus, who became a widower 19 years ago, feels blessed that he has since found “another wonderful wife” and established a blended family to share in Father’s Day celebrations. His second wife, Jean, came to the mar- riage with a son and a daughter to add to his three sons. Altogether, there are nine grandchildren. “I lost my dad when I was 8 and my mother when I was 15,” Elkus says. “That left a mark on me, and I hold on to family.” Robert Jones is a Shirt Box customer who thinks of Elkus as family. He calls him “Pops.” “I get a lot of attention from him and think of him as an adopted dad,” Jones says. “He knows the products but never pressures me to buy something. I’m very fond of shirts, ties and accessories I’ve bought from him.” Elkus, who divides his time between homes in Farmington Hills and Florida’s Delray Beach, has received shirts, sweat- ers and jewelry in recognition of previ- ous Father’s Days. “I don’t have to wait for Father’s Day to get special clothes for myself,” Elkus says. “Because of Ron’s business, I can get those things 12 months a year.” * The New York Times, Associated Press, The Examiner, The Record 'JTIFS5IFBUSFt0DUPCFSo ticketmaster.com, 800-982-2787 & box office.
