Naomi Klein, author of
This Changes Everything

duced by Lena Dunhan. Uncle Howard,
a documentary directed by Aaron
Brookner, recalls the late Howard
Brookner, the filmmaker’s uncle, who
set an example for documentary work.
This Changes Everything, directed
by Avi Lewis and inspired by the inter-
national bestseller written by his wife,
Naomi Klein, presents powerful exam-
ples of communities directly affected
by climate change and explores ways
of dealing with the issues to boost
economies.
“I go to a handful of festivals
throughout the year, and I especially
enjoy them when I can travel and
be out of town,” says Maltin, who
teaches a film appreciation class at
the University of Southern California
School of Cinematic Arts. “When I’m
away from home, I can really immerse
myself in the festival. I’m not walking
the dog or taking out the garbage.”
Maltin became fascinated with films
while growing up in New Jersey, where
his after-school activities included
watching Laurel and Hardy and The
Little Rascals. He also enjoyed tuning
into Walt Disney’s weekly programs.
After looking to library books to
study the history of films, Maltin start-
ed his own fanzine as a high-school
student, ultimately reaching a mail
circulation of 1,500 subscribers.
Before finishing high school, Maltin
was recommended to a publisher, and

a 45-year run of writing film directo-
ries began. His 30-year career on TV’s
Entertainment Tonight launched after
he was seen on the Today show pro-
moting his books.
“When I got married, my wife
and I moved to Manhattan,” Maltin
recalls. “After I commuted to Los
Angeles for a year and a half to work
on Entertainment Tonight, Alice and I
moved to Los Angeles. Our daughter,
Jessie, was born here.
“We found a congregation with a
wonderful rabbi when we moved out
here. He performed my daughter’s
baby naming almost 30 years ago.
Then he was there for her bat mitzvah.
Six months ago, he officiated at her
wedding.”
Both his wife and daughter work
with Maltin. While Alice Maltin takes
care of business tasks, Jessie is respon-
sible for social media.
“I’m 65, but in Hollywood, I add
that I can play 64,” jokes Maltin, who
advises Jewish audiences that they
“haven’t lived until they’ve heard John
Barrymore say the word ‘ganif ’ in
Counsellor at Law.”
