Super Summer

Plan something fun for everyone
with our indispensable guide.

Jennifer Lovy | Special to the Jewish News

S

ummertime in Michigan arguably
makes the rest of the year in the
Mitten so much more tolerable.
The only downside to June, July and
August — there aren’t enough weekends
to experience all the fairs, festivals and
activities that get packed into the 93
days, 15 hours and 47 minutes of sum-
mer.
While places like the Detroit Zoo,
Greenfield Village, Up North, parks,
pools and splash pads are tried-and-true
destinations for any summer schedule.
Here are some unique locations and
new activities (along with some classic
favorites, too). Grab a lemonade, put on
your flip-flops, take the paper outside —
now that it’s finally warm — and read
about some of the many hot spots for
adventure.
Whether you’re looking for a weekend
getaway, quick day trip or something a
little different, below is a sample of some
of the many options for summer fun.

NEW TO DO
Lego Discovery Center opened earlier
this year at Great Lakes Crossing in
Auburn Hills. The attraction offers a
number of interactive Lego activities for
visitors of all ages.
Also new to the area, the world’s larg-
est penguinarium opened at the Detroit
Zoo, and visitors have been raving
about the 326,000-gallon Polk Penguin
Conservation Center.
And, on display at the Henry Ford
Museum, The Magical History Tour: A
Beatles Memorabilia Exhibit through
mid-September.
Experience Up North at the Outdoor

Adventure Center in Downtown
Detroit. The OAC, courtesy of the
Department of Natural Resources, brings
some of the state’s best outdoor activities
inside through hands-on activities, simu-
lators and exhibits to Detroit’s riverfront.
For example, visitors can go fishing, kay-
aking, mountain biking or snowmobiling
on simulators. Kids’ favorites include
walking around a giant waterfall, climb-
ing the roots and exploring the canopy of
a tree and walking across a giant suspen-
sion bridge.
A little farther from home, tours of the
state Capitol building in Lansing
(capitol.michigan.gov) are now available
on Saturdays as well as weekdays.
The Gerald R. Ford Presidential
Library & Museum in Grand Rapids
reopens on June 7, following extensive
renovations (fordlibrarymuseum.gov).
Battle Creek’s Binder Park Zoo now
offers visitors a unique African overnight
experience. Families participate in ani-
mal presentations, activities and get the
chance to sleep in an authentic African
tented camp (binderparkzoo.org).

DAY TRIPPIN’
OR A WEEKEND GETAWAY
Cedar Point is arguably one of the
country’s best amusement parks, and
we’re lucky enough to live about two
hours from the roller coaster capital of
the world. New this year, is the “tallest,
fastest and longest dive coaster in the
world,” according to the park website
(cedarpoint.com).
Make it a day trip to Cedar Point
or turn a visit to Ohio into a weekend
getaway with a stop at Put-in-Bay.
