BRENDA
BETEL, 92, of
West Bloomfield,
died May 26, 2016.
Brenda was
born in Radymno,
Poland. After
Germany defeated
Betel
Poland, she and
her family went to
the Russian side
and were sent to Siberia, where her
parents died and she remained for six
years.
From there she returned to Poland
briefly before going to Germany,
where she joined a Jewish youth
group called Polei Mizrahi. She and
group members traveled to France
and from there left in a small ship to
Israel. Before landing, they were sur-
rounded by three British war ships,
which escorted them to Cyprus,
where they were detained for a year.
She arrived in Israel in 1947, where
she met her husband, Sam, a tailor.
Thirteen days after their wedding, he
fought in the War for Independence
for 14 months. After having two chil-
dren, Edward and Dahlia, the family
moved from Israel to Detroit, where
they were welcomed by Sam’s family.
After Sam’s death, Brenda became
a devoted volunteer at Sinai-Grace
Hospital and the Holocaust Memorial
Center. She also was a mainstay at
Shabbat services at Adat Shalom
Synagogue in Farmington Hills.
She is survived by her sons and
daughters-in-law, Edward and Ellen
Betel, and Aaron and Tammy Betel;
daughter, Dahlia Klein; grandchil-
dren, Wendy and Rabbi Joshua Heller,

Adam Toal, Jodi and Ian Deshmukh,

Yellin, Melanie Betel, Nicole Budaj
and Jim Chatfield, and Michelle
Budaj; great-grandchildren, Caleb,

and Benjamin Block, Sophia, Maya
and Asher Deshmukh, Ari, Leo

of the late Harvey Klein.
