NOW ON 910AM EVERY FRIDAY 12 NOON - 2PM his year, University of Michigan Hillel participated in Good Deeds Day, a national day of community service and a global movement committed to doing good. Initiated in Israel in 2007, this project has grown from 7,000 participants to almost 1 million in 2015. Hillel International is a partner of Good Deeds Day and, this year, 75 U-M students volunteered, led by the efforts of Michigan Hillel’s Social Action Chair Sarah Parkes. On April 10, U-M students took a break from studying and volunteered their time in 10 different service projects throughout Ann Arbor, Washtenaw County and Flint. Projects included distributing water to the residents of Flint, reading and tutoring elementary school students at the Ann Arbor Public Library, leading BINGO for the residents at a senior living community center, preparing the U-M Botanical Gardens for the spring season, assisting children with disabilities at a gymnastics center and more. The projects occurred throughout the course of the day and culminated in an ice cream party where we celebrated the mean- ingful work we took part in. On Good Deeds Day, I participated in a project at the Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum, where kids of all ages enjoy interactive learning. I, along with six other Michigan students, arrived in late morning for an afternoon of hard — but fun — work. While I knew a few of the other volunteers at the museum, I had the opportunity to meet more Jewish students from my community on T INSIGHTFUL, RELEVANT AND INTELLECTUAL Journalist and accomplished author, Bankole Thompson, challenges the conscience of the powerful and breaks down complex policy questions each week on his all talk show “Redline”. After hours of organizing and preparing materials for future learning, the seven of us had the pleasure of wandering around the museum ourselves. After all of the “behind- the-scenes” preparation we participated in, we saw firsthand the smiles on the children’s faces, all of whom were benefitting from our volunteer efforts. @ Marti Silver of West Bloomfield recently gradu- ated from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.
