GVSU Hillel: HCAM Israel Fellow Ziv Zelinger; MSU Hillel Israel Fellow Rotem Raiter; senior Madelyne Soltz, Walled Lake; speaker Lucy Aharish; junior Jessica Sherbin, Farmington Hills; senior Ilana Woronoff and freshman Sunny Nayberg, both of West Bloomfield; sophomore Zoe Kaufman, Chicago; junior Sarah Klein, Bloomfield Hills; and senior Shelby Bruseloff, West Bloomfield. continued from page 56 productive discussion about Israel at GVSU. Aharish is the first Arab-Israeli news anchor for Primetime Channel 2 News, and her ability to use her position of visibility to focus on coexistence is commendable. A common criticism of people who spout anti-Israeli rhetoric is that those individuals are not depicting the whole image, or they’re skewing the facts. While that may be true, it is up to us, the Jewish community, not to be guilty of the same offense. Jewish people have a storied past, pres- ent and future, and that story is rich in detail and complexity. It is a disservice to ourselves and those around us to pretend otherwise. I am so thankful to Aharish and Hillel at GVSU, as well as the many co-sponsors of Aharish’s lecture, for being willing to engage in a complicated discus- sion about a complicated topic. I still don’t have a good answer for those who ask me “How do Jews feel about Israel?” but Aharish’s ability to facilitate meaningful conversations about this question, without losing any of the intricacies of the Israeli-Palestinian con- flict allowed me, as well as others, to feel a little more comfortable living in the gray area. The first step in creating any sort of lasting coexistence is being able to listen to each other, and my hope is that leaders in the fight for peace, like Aharish, con- tinue to push for conversations like those Aharish started at GVSU. @ Awaken the Beauty Within...
