Third-graders perform during the zimriyah (songfest).

M

ore than 350 members of
the community celebrated
Israel’s 68th anniversary of
statehood at Hillel Day School’s annual
Independence Day Carnival on May 12
at the Farmington Hills school.
The after-school event capped a day
devoted to projects and games that
brought together the entire student body,
and included a school-wide zimriyah
(songfest) that ended with a soaring ren-
dition of “Hatikvah,” with flags waving.
New this year was a Ramah Rib Burn-
Off organized by Detroit’s Ramah Fellows.
Five Jewish community organizations
vied for the title of “maven” as they grilled
kosher ribs using top-secret recipes.

Steve Freedman, head of school, and
other staff members judged the competi-
tion; while many were delicious, with
“meat falling off the bone,” Freedman
said, the judges ultimately named
Congregation Beth Shalom in Southfield
as the winner.
“It was a great opportunity for the
larger community to come together to
support Hillel Day School,” said Rabbi
Robert Gamer, Beth Shalom’s rabbi. “The
Talmud teaches us (Sandhedrin 109)
‘ein simchah eila b’basar,’ that we rejoice
through meat! It was a great way to end
the rejoicing on Yom HaAtzmaut, and I
look forward to defending our title next
year.”
