MUSICAL NOTE

Since graduating
from Andover High
School in 2004, L.A.-
based opera singer
Justine Aronson
has been racking
up accolades with
her performances
around the coun-
Justine Aronson try — including
the New York Times,
which said she possesses “a deep

reservoir of expressive devices.” As
a scholar-in-residence at Bloomfield
Hills High School, the soprano heads
home for two concerts as guest solo-
ist, accompanied by pianist Steven
Wogaman and saxophonist Alan
Posner, at BHHS in Bloomfield Hills. At
7:30 p.m. Saturday, May 21 ($10-$15),
Aronson will perform works by Richard
Strauss, Christopher Cerrone and Lori
Laitman. Laitman’s work, I Never Saw
Another Butterfly, features texts written
by children who perished at Terezin
— the composer herself comes from a
long line of cantors. At 4 p.m. Sunday,
May 22 (no charge), Aronson will join
the BHHS symphonic band and sym-
phonic orchestra to perform works by
Frank Ticheli, Heitor Villa-Lobos and
Tchaikovsky. Bloomfield.org.

Ehrenreich

adult, Hamilton defended Jews from the
bigoted attitudes of the day.
P.S.: Miranda and his wife aren’t Jewish,
but she loves Fiddler on the Roof. At their
2010 wedding, Miranda (aided by many
talented friends) sang “L’Chayim/To Life.” It
is such a well-done and joyful version that
you really have to see the YouTube video,
titled “Vanessa’s Wedding Surprise.” Just
enter the title.

CASTING AND OTHER NOTES
Alden Ehrenreich, 26, has been cast as
Han Solo in an upcoming Star Wars film
that will fill in some of the story of Solo’s
life before the first Star Wars movie. Also,
Joaquin Phoenix, 41, may play Jesus in

a bio-pic mostly about Mary Magdalene.
If he does play the part, it will be the first
time a Jewish actor has played Jesus in a
straight dramatic film.
Two critically acclaimed documenta-
ries are now available online/streaming:
Iris is about Iris Apfel, 94, a woman who
has a genius for putting together styl-
ish outfits and a personal style that is
fascinating to watch. You have to see the
film to appreciate why she is a beloved
fashion icon, even though she isn’t a
designer (now on Netflix). The director
was the late, great Albert Maysles. Over
on HBO, there’s the Oscar-nominated
short documentary Claude Lanzmann:
Spectres of the Shoah (2015).
