N
ationally, May is designated
as Older Americans Month.
But at Congregation Shaarey
Zedek in Southfield, Friday, May 27, is
set aside for the oldest members of our
community.
The 15th annual Bessie Spector
Oldest Jewish Americans Brunch will
take place that day at 11 a.m. to honor
individuals 95 years or older.
This year’s program, co-chaired by
Rosie Schlussel and Nancy Solway,
is themed “Songs of Celebration:
Honoring the Greatest Generation.”
“We look forward to recognizing
the special individuals in our commu-
nity who bore witness to history,” said
Barbra Giles, Jewish Senior Life (JSL)
associate director. “These special people
include those who remember the first
automobile, the invention of electricity,
the telephone and lived through the
Great Depression.
“We will honor those who immi-
grated to America and set down roots
in Detroit, those who offered service to
our country in World War I and World
War II, and our very special group of
Holocaust survivors.”
Shuttle service to the brunch will be
available from the Applebaum Jewish
Community Campus buildings in West
Bloomfield and the Taubman Jewish
Community Campus buildings in Oak
Park.
The program is sponsored by the
Bessie Spector family and community
supporters in partnership with JSL,
the Jewish Community Center, Jewish
Family Service, JVS and the Jewish
Federation.
It will feature Shaarey Zedek’s Hazzan
David Propis and will include honoree
recognition by Carol Rosenberg, JSL
Foundation director. This year approxi-
mately 170 individuals were identified,
with 80 planning to attend the event.
Fourteen of those identified are 100
years or older.
“This special occasion offers our
community an opportunity to honor
and recognize these special citizens
who paved the way for us today,” Giles
said. “This is the generation that built
Detroit and our Jewish community and
are well deserving of recognition.”
