“We’re very proud of that.
“I don’t believe you have to bring in
people from New York or Los Angeles
to do a quality show. I think we have an
awful lot of talent right here, and when
people come out and see the show, it
will prove that.”
While the director is not from
Michigan (he grew up in New Jersey),
he certainly has Michigan ties. Peter
Albom, Mitch’s brother, fills that role
among the creative team.
“Working with my brother has been
the fulfillment of another dream,”
Albom says. “We both went into the arts
and, for a very brief period, we lived
in New York at the same time. I was a
starving musician, and he was a starving
dancer and actor.
“While I went into journalism, he
went over to [work in] Europe, and
that’s 35 years plus since we were in the
same place. He lived all over the world.
We used to joke about never being able
to work together.”
When Mitch sent Peter an email sug-
gesting this collaboration, the positive
response made for a happy surprise.
Another satisfying experience has been
the reaction of a young fan, a 6-year-old
brought for medical attention from the
Haiti orphanage Albom supports.
“I brought her down for rehearsal,
and she watched some songs and the
dancing,” he recalls. “She just jumped up
and started doing her own dance. That
really said to me that there is something
to this whole musical theater thing.
“If it can excite a child who just as
easily could have been looking at a video
game, then there’s something special
about what we’re doing.”
With regard to ticket holders filling
the seats each time the curtain goes up,
Albom believes he can, in some instanc-
es, think of himself as a “love guru,”
bringing women and men together in
appreciation of stage productions.
“I know that a lot of times women
tend to like musicals more than men,
and women often will drag their hus-
bands or boyfriends out to the theater,”
he explains. “The women will enjoy,
and the guys will say they don’t like
musicals.
“I thought it would be fun, especially
with so many women hockey fans, if I
created a hockey musical, something
guys would enjoy as well: ‘It’s hockey?’
‘OK, I’ll go.’
“Maybe I’ll help bring people
together.”
