PLAY BALL!
During the 1934
Detroit Tigers’
season, base-
ball mania was
sweeping the
city — and much
of it was captured
on film, thanks to
George Moriarty.
The Tigers’ start-
ing third baseman
during their 1909 pennant winning
season, Moriarty went on to become the
Tigers’ manager then one of the greatest
umpires in the American League — dur-
ing the 1935 World Series, he ejected four
Chicago Cubs for their merciless anti-
Semitic taunting of Hank Greenberg. The
footage that he filmed became the basis
of Play Ball! The Story of the 1934 Tigers,
which Moriarty wrote and directed. The
first baseball movie to be made with
sound, Play Ball! premiered at the Book-
Cadillac Hotel in Detroit on Jan. 9, 1935,
and was viewed by 2 million people that
year before fading into obscurity. Newly
rediscovered and restored, the
film will be screened at the Detroit
Historical Museum’s Spring Film Series
3 p.m. Saturday-Sunday, May 14-15.

THE RIVIERA CINEMA

Hirsch

Johansson

airs on CBS on Thursday, May 12, at 8
p.m. Judd Hirsch, 81, will guest star
as Leonard’s (Johnny Galecki) never-
before-seen anthropologist father.
Last month, Galecki told an industry
audience that he recruited Hirsch last
January, when both attended an NBC
tribute to Jim Burrows, 75 (Burrows
directed Hirsch in Taxi in addition to
directing Big Bang). Galecki told the
same audience that he drew elements
from Alex Reiger, Hirsch’s Taxi character,
in molding the Leonard character. Both
Alex and Leonard, he said, acted as the
voice of reason in their group — while
actually they were as confused as their
friends.

AT THE MOVIES
Opening Friday, May 6: Captain America:
Civil War has the best advance buzz of
any comic book-based spectacular com-
ing out this year. Maybe because it has
a real issue anchoring its plot — one
that is reminiscent of the recent Apple
v. the federal government hacking dis-
pute. Collateral damage involving the
Avengers leads to calls for government
oversight of the superhero group and
some accountability. A faction of the
Avengers, led by Captain America/Steve
Rogers (Chris Evans), wants no such over-
sight. Another Avenger faction, led by
Iron Man/Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.,
who is “3/8” Jewish), is willing to accept
oversight. Co-starring tribe members
include Scarlett Johansson, 31 (Black
Widow) and Paul Rudd, 47 (Ant-Man).
