THE CONCOURS
Some 5,000 to 10,000 people will
show up this summer to see about
300 Ferraris, Dusenbergs and other
immaculate classic cars.
This is Detroit’s 38th year, and it
is known as one of the three largest
Concours events in the country.
The Concours runs July 29-31, with
a rally tour on Friday, a car auction,
the Motor City Mingle, and concert
featuring Mitch Ryder and the Detroit
Wheels on Saturday, and the show on
Sunday.
“People all over the world know
about this,” he said. “We have cars that
come from about 20 states.”
The price range for Sunday’s event
is $40-$150.
“You can see all kinds of cars at the
Cruise, but you’re not going to see
Dusenbergs or rally cars from Europe
lined up. You’ll see pristine, unique
and collectible cars at the Concours.”
He said that some celebrities have
shown cars at previous Concours
events.
“Usually they like to stay anony-
mous,” he said. “Tim Allen has been
there, but it’s not something he wants
to advertise. Kid Rock showed a car
there, too.”
And the question of what makes a
car a collectible is a loaded one.
“A 1965 Mustang is a classic, but
it’s not really a collectible because they
made so many of them,” he said. “You
look at a car that was made in the
1930s like a French Delahaye and that
could fit today. It’s more stylish than
anything we’ve produced since.”
And what will a Concours be like 50
years from now?
“I think that when these shows
started, the best in show was a
20-year-old car. But think about a
20-year-old car today, and it’s from the
1990s,” he said. “We don’t even think
about putting that in the show.”
Patty says that they will drive or fly
anywhere to go to an auto show.
“We have friends all over,” she said.
“We’re stewards of these cars because
they are like works of art. We take
care of these cars and show apprecia-
tion for them, and we try to get other
people involved so hopefully they, too,
develop a passion for them.”
