T amarack Camps kicked off its annual Send a Kid to Tamarack fundraising campaign with an “Evening of Comedy” on April 14 at the Garden Theater in Midtown Detroit. Modi, an Israeli stand-up comedian, actor and cantor, filled the room with smiles and laughter. A highlight of the evening was when Holocaust survivor Fred Findling told how he received a scholarship to spend his first summer in America at the Fresh Air Camp, now Tamarack Camps. “At camp, I was no longer a war-torn, orphaned Holocaust survivor,” he said. “I was just another kid play- ing baseball, swimming in the lake and singing joyous Jewish songs. My summer camp experience exposed me to Judaism and instilled a lifelong commitment to living a vibrant and engaged Jewish life.” Darrin Findling, Fred’s son and Tamarack Camps presi- dent, said, “My father’s experience at Fresh Air allowed him to raise his children to love being Jewish. He ultimately sent my siblings and me to camp. Today, my children and their cousins attend Tamarack, making us a three-generation Tamarack Camps family.” To contribute to Send a Kid to Tamarack, go to www. tamarackcamps.com/sk2t. * Co-chairs Jodi Neff and Abbe Sherbin Guest speaker Fred Findling and his son Darrin, Tamarack Camps president Marty and Lindsey Maddin, Sarah and Jim Rush, Allison and Marc Nakisher Comedian Modi performing at the fundraiser Vanishing Hunger Yad Ezra’s annual “friendraiser” draws big crowd to aid the kosher food pantry.
