n April 6, 340 people filled the
Holocaust Memorial Center in
Farmington Hills for “A Taste of
Klezmer,” a membership event featuring
Detroit native and klezmer violinist Yale
Strom and his band, Hot Pstromi.
Members filled the auditorium and over-
flow room for the concert. The performance
concluded with Holocaust survivors Barbara
Cohen, Fryda Fleish, Erna Gorman, Manny
Mittelman, Jeannette Olson, Esther and
Erwin Posner, Judy Pruchno, Guy Stern and
Michael Weiss leading the crowd in a sing-
along.
“It was a pleasure hosting Hot Pstromi,”
said Interim Executive Director Cheryl
Guyer. “Having the opportunity to see and
hear local survivors enjoy the songs they
performed was incredibly special.”
Chaired by Pam and Ken Bloom, the event
was supported by Doris and Fred Blechman,
Robin and Leo Eisenberg, Shari (Ferber)
and Alon Kaufman, PNC Foundation, the
Meyer and Anna Prentis Family Foundation,
and Elaine and Michael Serling.

Soup For The Soul JFS and Heart 2 Hart help young teens learn about helping the homeless.
groups of teens chopped, diced and cooked mush-
room barley soup for 150-plus homeless individuals
in Detroit. Caterer Kathleen O’Neill also taught them
to make cornbread.
The students brought donations of warm cloth-
ing items and, under the supervision of Heart 2
Hart’s Larry Olenick, helped put together food and
basic-needs packages for the homeless in Detroit.

J
ewish Family Service (JFS), in partnership
with the nonprofit Heart 2 Hart, recently invit-
ed community bar/bat mitzvah-aged students
to a volunteer event called Chicken Soup for the Soul
of Detroit held at Congregation Shaarey Zedek.
As part of the monthly JFS Because We Care pro-
gram, JFS CEO Perry Ohren and his team were there
to help the students gain a firm understanding about
both organizations and how they help the commu-
nity.
