DELI
Dick Hyman
of Venice. Two years ago, he and his
wife attended a course in the Talmud,
mostly learning about its scope.
Hyman, who grew up in Mount
Vernon, N.Y., developed his musical
interests in part by listening to jazz
albums collected by an older brother.
He studied classical piano with an
uncle, Anton Rovinsky, a concert
pianist, before attending Columbia
University. A few years later, Hyman
became Benny Goodman’s pianist.
Work preceded college, and he has
joined many stellar colleagues for proj-
ects.
“Ruth Laredo was a good friend,
and I admired her as a pianist,” Hyman
recalls. “We had an unlikely trio with
Marian McPartland. Ruth was the clas-
sical representative, and Marian and I
were the jazz guys.
“We had a lot of fun trading back and
forth. Very often, Marian and I were
making variations on what Ruth did.
The collaboration started on Marian’s
radio show.”
Hyman’s television commitments,
reaching from the Sid Caesar and Mitch
Miller programs to In Performance at
the White House, brought an Emmy for
his original score heard on “Sunshine’s
on the Way,” a daytime drama, and for
musical direction of a PBS special about
Eubie Blake.
Hyman was a pioneer in electronic
music using the Moog synthesizer.
“I got into electronic music because
the record company I was signed with
thought it would be a commercial, sale-
able item,” Hyman says.
“They put me together with an
expert in electronic music, and they
were right. When we made the first
Moog synthesizer recording, ‘The
Minotaur,’ it was popular for a while.”
As recordings continue, he is pleased
with a recent album performed with
his daughter Judy, a violinist and the
only one of his three children to pursue
music professionally. Late Last Summer
has a collection of waltzes that are her
compositions entirely.
“My most recent recording was
one I did at Farley’s House of Pianos
in Wisconsin,” he says. “It was made
during a concert, and I will be giving
another concert there very soon. The
title of the album is House of Pianos,
and it includes ‘Send in the Clowns,’
‘Yesterdays’ and several pieces by
Thelonious Monk.
“I included the theme song from an
old television game show I used to play
for (Beat the Clock) and my own theme
from The Purple Rose of Cairo, another
Woody Allen film.”
Since settling in Florida, Hyman
has moved away from participation in
recent Allen productions.
“Woody was very interesting and
cooperative, allowing me to do a great
many things, and we got along very
well,” Hyman says. “Generally, the basic
use of the music was determined by
Woody. He likes to select the songs,
and I would take it from there. He has a
feeling for old pop songs and how they
relate to dramatic situations.”
