spirituality » Rabbi Dahlen To Join Shaarey Zedek Clergy Team R abbi Yonatan Dahlen has been hired by Congregation Shaarey Zedek in Southfield, said Larry Nemer, CSZ president. Dahlen will begin work in mid-June, soon after his ordination from the Jewish Theological Seminary of America. Born in Sioux City, Iowa, Dahlen grew up with a Jewish identity but without Jewish practice. Serendipitously, he was introduced Rabbi Yonatan to the beauty of Dahlen Jewish life by the Orthodox professor from the Bronx who taught the obliga- tory Christianity course at Augustana College in Sioux Falls, S.D., where Dahlen earned his bachelor’s degree in religious studies, English literature and English creative writing. Encouraged by this professor to attend graduate school in a setting that would provide the opportunity for greater Jewish inter- action and observance, Dahlen chose Brandeis University, where he earned a master’s degree in Near Eastern and Judaic studies (Jewish Philosophy Focus) in 2011. While at JTS, Dahlen served as rabbinic intern at Barnard/Columbia Hillel and also at Town and Village Synagogue. He is fluent in Hebrew, German, Italian and Yiddish, and also reads Spanish and French. “I am humbled and honored to be joining the Shaarey Zedek family and its storied history,” Dahlen said. “The synagogue, Metro Detroit and the Detroit Jewish community are going through exciting growth, and I am beyond excited to return to the Midwest and be part of this new energy and creativity.” Dahlen will return to Shaarey Zedek for the Shabbat weekend beginning May 20 and will attend the synagogue’s annual meeting on Monday evening, May 23. “Rabbi Dahlen brings with him an incredible energy, warmth, wisdom and passion for Jewish life,” said Rabbi Aaron Starr. “We are looking forward to him joining our clergy team and to his help in furthering the congregation’s commitment to joyful Judaism and to building a community of inspiration and transformation.” A Jewish Women’s Day of Learning TRANSPARENT JUDAISM IN THE 21 ST CENTURY: What’s Gender Got to Do With It? 6XQGD\Ŧ0D\ DPSP at the Berman Center for Jewish Education at Congregation Shaarey Zedek 27375 Bell Rd. đ 6RXWKƓHOG0, 1##!/0! ƫ+*0%+*ƫĸāĉƫđƫ 1*$ƫ%*(1 !
