he ground floor of the cav-
ernous Jam Handy Building
on East Grand Boulevard in
Detroit was transformed into a creative
Shushan paradise — complete with
artistic palm trees, oversized flow-
ers, fanciful animals and streamers of
strung lights, ribbons and scarves —
for a post-Purim party, Detroit Jews
for Justice-style.
Close to 100 young adults and those
young-at-heart showed up on March
31, ready to partake of a veggie potluck
“fit for a queen” and dance to a DJ. The
highlight was a multimedia social jus-

tice Purim shpiel about Queen Esther’s
effort to drive Shushan “emergency
manager” Haman out of town.
The gathering included many
participants from Isaac Agree
Downtown Synagogue in Detroit and
Congregation T’chiyah in Oak Park,
which hired Rabbi Alana Alpert last
year to direct Detroit Jews for Justice
(DJJ) and lead services.
Offering education, leadership
development, grassroots campaigns,
community-building and arts and cul-
ture, DJJ is renewing the Jewish ethic
of working for social justice.
