Cancer Society, Technion Join For Cancer Event A first-of-its-kind collabora- tion between the American Cancer Society (ACS) and the American Technion Society (ATS) took place March 29 at the Westin Hotel Southfield. In keeping with the ACS mission of “freeing the world from the pain and suffering of cancer,” Technion Professor Daphne Weihs shared her expertise in metastatic cancer. “At the Technion [in Haifa], collabo- ration sparks global innovation,” Weihs said, as she explained her research to 40 attendees, some of whom included the Detroit medical and oncology commu- nities at Henry Ford Hospital, St. John/ Providence, Karmanos Cancer Center and Jewish Family Service. In addition, many cancer survivors attended to ask questions. A second-generation scientist at the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa, Weihs was named one of the top 50 influential women in Israel in 2015 and was inducted into the pres- tigious Technion Integrative Cancer Center (TICC). The TICC is run by Professor Aaron Ciechanover, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2004 for discovering a cause of cancer. The American Cancer Society provided Ciechanover with his earliest funding as a post-doctoral student in 1984. ACS has funded 47 Nobel Prize-winning cancer scientists. In other ACS news, Israel became the 23rd country to join Global Relay for Life, which includes more than 5,000 communities in the U.S. raising money for cancer through Relay for Life. Miri Ziv, CEO of the Israel Cancer Association, met with Ambassador Sally Cowal, senior vice president of ACS Global Cancer Control, at the World Cancer Congress in 2014. Their relationship grew and, this January, Israel signed the partnership agree- ment. Modi’in will hold its first annual Relay for Life Oct. 6-7. The West Bloomfield Relay for Life begins at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 11-Sunday, June 12, at West Bloomfield High School. For details, go to Relay. acsevents.org. * FREEDS of Windsor Lately!?
