T

he University of Michigan Hillel
earned AIPAC’s 2016 Duke
Rudman Leadership Award, the
organization’s highest honor to recognize
campuses leading in pro-Israel politi-
cal leadership and activism among its
student population and the larger com-
munity.
The award highlights Michigan Hillel’s
work to educate and mobilize students in
support of a strong U.S.-Israel relation-
ship. U-M had the largest delegation of
diverse student leaders in attendance.
Tilly Shames, executive director,
Michigan Hillel, said, “It was a very spe-
cial moment for our Hillel to be honored,
on stage in front of 18,000-plus people,
with cheers of ‘Go Blue!’ from the audi-
ence, for our pro-Israel work on campus.
I am so proud of our students — those
on campus today and those who came
before them — for their leadership and
for emphasizing the importance of the
America-Israel relationship.”
WolvPAC is one of U-M Hillel’s seven
student-led groups that comprise its
Israel Cohort. Developed by students,
the purpose of this group is to provide
students — regardless of their American
or Israeli political leanings — the oppor-
tunity to create tangible ties between
campus and Israel. This is done through
working with campus and community
leaders, as well as meeting with congres-
sional leaders.

U-M Hillel receives AIPAC’s top pro-
Israel campus award.

“Winning this award is an amazing
experience that acknowledges our hard
work on campus,” said Natalie Bloom, a
U-M junior and WolvPAC student leader
who spoke on stage accompanied by 20
U-M students.
“We have been able to lobby our
members of congress countless times,
making phone calls and sending emails
about issues regarding the U.S.-Israel
relationship, and to implement diverse
grassroots lobbying strategies. As a
result, the U-M pro-Israel community
has been able to defeat BDS [Boycott,
Divestment and Sanctions] twice on our
campus.”
Lynda Giles, chair, Michigan Hillel
board of trustees, said, “This award
recognizes the hard work of our student
leaders and staff team, bringing Israel
and Jewish life to campus in a meaning-
ful way every day.”
