Farbman out fishing with his son River
experience,” she says. “The creativity,
intelligence and personalities of the
team have made all the difference in
learning about the health care industry
and jump-starting my professional
career here in Detroit. The revitalization
of Detroit, especially the food scene, is
giving Michael and me the opportunity
to explore the city together.”
THE FARBMAN LEGACY
Looking at David Farbman’s roots,
his father, Burton D. Farbman, after
a brief honeymoon in Acapulco,
returned straight to his native Detroit.
He found a mere 13 cents in his
pocket. He remembers that experience
vividly nearly five decades later.
Burt Farbman started his professional
career working for a Chicago mortgage
firm, then went on to Schostak Brothers.
Within 100 days of his return from
Acapulco, he was seeking out tenants
to lease 9,800 square feet of space in
Redford plus 9,000 square feet of paved
parking — fully fenced in, with auto-
matic overhead doors and an up-to-date
sprinkler system.
Farbman was on the hunt for the per-
fect light manufacturing or warehouse
operation to lease the property, but he
was really just seeking opportunity.
The year was 1967. His hustle was
driven by necessity; his father, Dr.
Simon Farbman, became sick when
Burt was 9 and died when Burt was 11.
His life was forever changed. He needed
to help support his family.
Today, the Farbman Group, founded
by Burt in 1976, manages in excess of 20
million square feet of office, retail, mul-
tifamily and industrial space throughout
Southeast Michigan. The company
employs more than 200.
Burt joined the ranks of the
Junior Division of the Jewish Welfare
Federation in the 1970s and rose to
become its executive chairman, laying
the groundwork for a Farbman legacy
of philanthropy in Jewish and secular
Detroit over the last five decades.
Burt, who shares immense pride with
his wife, Suzy, in watching his sons and
grandchildren grow up, felt it would
be a good idea for the highly energetic
young David to learn how to hunt and
fish. He was right — it changed his life.
Burt, who grew up largely without a
father, told his sons to take ownership of
the rest of their lives and to realize that
almost everyone he’s met has had family
issues because of certain family dynam-
ics or miscommunications.
“No matter what happens in life
and whatever mistakes may occur, I
instructed them to realize that my love
is unwavering,” he says.
Today, being on-target with relation-
ships, work and community guides
David Farbman’s life. It’s a mindset rooted
in his family’s early lessons and grounded
in his obsession with the outdoors.
Now, he wants to help guide the
future of philanthropy in the com-
munity. Stepping up to lead isn’t just
about out-hunting his on-field targets
or his business competition. Leadership
is rooted in a simple lesson he learned
from his mother on several occasions.
“‘Luck, she’d say, ‘is at the side of the
able navigator.’”
