Up North Group
Earns Spot in
Slingshot Guide

L

’Dor v’Dor Northern Michigan
Women’s Jewish Leadership
Consortium has been selected
for inclusion in the 2016 Slingshot
Guide for Women and Children. The
grassroots organization has been rec-
ognized as an innovative organization
that has brought new life to Jews Up
North.
L’Dor v’Dor was founded in
November 2012, when women from
six congregations, all led by women
presidents, in Northern Michigan,
the Upper Peninsula and Ontario met
together. Since beginning, they have
sponsored two women’s retreats and
two intergenerational family retreats
per year, bringing together Jews from
remote, rural, lay-led communities to
share in worship, study and fellowship.
The organization is supported by
funding from the Jewish Women’s
Foundation of Metropolitan Detroit (a
three-year impact grant in 2013) and
the Ravitz Foundation Small Jewish
Communities Initiative. The congrega-
tions include Temple Jacob, Hancock;
Temple Beth Shalom, Ishpeming/
Marquette; Congregation Beth Jacob,
Sault Saint Marie, Ontario; Temple
Bnai Israel, Petoskey; and Temple Beth
Sholom, Traverse City.
Selected from among hundreds of
finalists reviewed by 93 profession-
als with expertise in grant-making
and Jewish communal life, the Guide
called L’Dor vDor “a model for bring-
ing together small, remote, lay-led
Jewish communities in rural Northern
Michigan.” Organizations included in
this year’s women and girls guide were
evaluated on their innovative approach,
the impact they have in their work, the
leadership they have in their sector and
their effectiveness at achieving results.
“L’Dor v’Dor is proud to be among
the 21 organizations included,” said
Carol Ellstein of Congregation Bnai
Israel. “The organizations included in
Slingshot’s women and girls supple-
ment demonstrate the impact on and
by women and girls in Jewish life
today.”
The Slingshot guide was supported
through a generous partnership with
the Jewish Women’s Foundation of New
York. Being listed in the Guide is often
a critical step for selected organizations
to attain funding to expand the reach
of their work. The Guide also is a fre-
quently used resource for donors seek-
ing to support organizations transform-
ing the world in novel and interesting
ways.
