POOL HAUL
Seven swimmers and one diver from
Berkley High School competed last week
in the Michigan High School Athletic
Association Division 2 boys swimming
and diving state meet at Saginaw Valley
State University.
Of the eight, five are Jewish: swimmers
Cameron Berke, Caleb Duchan, Eli Falk
and Adam Nave, and diver Ari Wolfson.
Berke, Duchan and Falk are seniors
and team co-captains. They’ve been
swimming together for several years
including in the summer with the
Huntington Woods Aquatic Club team.
Berke, Duchan, Falk and Nave qualified
for the state meet in the 200-yard medley
relay and were seeded No. 20 (1:41.96).
The same four qualified No. 27 in the 200
freestyle relay (1:32.93) and No. 28 in the
400 freestyle relay (3:25.60).
Falk was seeded No. 19 in the 100 but-
terfly (:54.86).
Wolfson was seeded No. 12 in diving
(366.45 points).

eightlifter extraordinaire Jeff
Ellis has begun working out
again after being sidelined
for several weeks because of a shoulder
injury.
Unfortunately, the injury
and layoff will prevent the
56-year-old West Bloomfield
resident and cancer sur-
vivor from competing in
the American Powerlifting
Federation national champi-
onships May 7-8 in Chicago.
Jeff Ellis
Ellis qualified for nationals
in his first attempt at the APF state cham-
pionships in October in Grand Rapids. He
set a state record in the ages 55-59, 198-
pound division in bench press with a lift
of 286.6 pounds, breaking the old record
of 275 pounds.
“My shoulder was bothering me then,
but it was tolerable,” he said.
The injury worsened, forcing him to
the sidelines. He wasn’t able to compete
last month in the 2016 Michigan Senior
Olympics Winter Games. Ellis has won
10 gold medals in weightlifting in the
Michigan Senior Olympics, the latest in
the 2015 Summer Games in August.
Ellis is hoping to participate in the
2016 Senior Olympics Summer Games
in August and try to qualify for the APF
nationals again in the fall.

Arena on a goal with 29.2 seconds left,
but the Cranes wouldn’t have beaten their
rivals without the sterling play of goalie
Nolan Rogow.
The senior made 30 saves,
including some big stops down the
stretch. Country Day had a brief
5-on-3 advantage in the third peri-
od, but Rogow and his teammates
wouldn’t let the Yellowjackets break
a 1-1 tie.
Defending state champion
Cranbrook-Kingswood advanced
to play Hancock in the semifinals
last Friday at USA Hockey Arena in
Plymouth. That game, however, saw the
Cranes lose 2-1 in overtime.

APPLICATIONS DUE

gram.

excelled in academics and athletics are
eligible. Judging criteria includes financial
need, community service and extra-
curricular activities.
The foundation expects to award
five $1,000 scholarships in conjunction
with the 26th annual Hank Greenberg
Memorial Golf Invitational on June 13 at
Franklin Hills Country Club.
Go to the foundation’s web site at www.
michiganjewishsports.org for an applica-
tion. For information, contact foundation
