Complete kitchen and bathroom remodeling as well as furniture design and installations including granite, wood and other materials. Lois Haron Allied Member ASID 248.851.6989 “Without Rules” includes a piece by Detroit- and Chicago-based artist Scott Reeder and a trio by California artist Robert Larson (above, left) and Robert Rauschenberg’s Horsefeathers Thirteen - VIII, 1972 (above, right). so much that they continued with it, eventually participating in online auc- tions. “Not only does our art include works by artists whose names people have heard of, it also includes student art from the College for Creative Studies, Cranbrook and Michigan State,” says Alan, whose favorite piece is always the last piece added, now Sweet Tweet, a Tim Hawkinson bronze sculpture of a small child with birds. “We support graduate students, and we go to the new galleries that are opening in Detroit and Hamtramck. The works don’t have to be expensive to be attractive.” Rebecca’s favorite piece is a print by Jean DuBuffet. “It has sentimental value,” she says. “It wasn’t our first piece; we started with ceramics. It was our first wall piece. It’s an abstract print in red, white and blue.” The Rosses have become regulars at the well-known art shows across the country. Alan compares the Armory Art Show in New York to a Broadway show in theater. “When the Armory Art Show occurs, there are secondary and third-market shows, like off-Broadway and off-off Broadway theater,” he says. “We see the Armory exhibit as well as 15 other exhib- its all over Manhattan, where there are displays of work created by artists who don’t have the money and the power to get into bigger shows.” He suggests that Metro Detroiters interested in starting their own collec- tions visit Expo Chicago in the fall. “It has fabulous galleries from around the world,” Alan says. “You can see private collections. The more you see, the more you learn.” He also loves visiting known art sites online. “I click and click and click, and I get sucked in,” he says. The Rosses list a number of Jewish art- ists — local and distant — as represented in their holdings: duct-tape painter Tirtzah Bassel, sculptor Magdalena Abakanowicz, industrial-designer Ron Arad, painter Marcia Freedman and sculptor Ursula von Rydingsvard. Alan’s Jewish identity was in part instilled through membership at Temple Israel, where he had his bar mitzvah. His maternal grandfather, Max Gross, who fled Germany after Kristallnacht, drew maps of that country for the United States Army during World War II, helping with fighting strategy. “Alan is super-creative mechanically and structurally,” Rebecca says. “He’s made several pieces of furniture for our home in his full workshop. “Collecting relaxes us and gives us a creative outlet. It’s kind of a nurtur- ing outlook. Alan runs Gallagher Fire Equipment, a fire suppression company, and I handle the payables. The business is very focused, and we get away from that world with art.” Alan agrees. “There are no rules, no price points and no right or wrong in col- lecting,” he says. “Every collector eventu- ally has to go from zero to one — from no art to one piece. Any decision a collec- tor makes is not a bad decision. “Each piece is liked for a reason and bought for that reason. I can’t think of one piece we are sorry we bought, but there are pieces we are sorry we didn’t buy.” * HAPPY ST. PATRICK'S DAY Siegel's Deli 3426 E. West Maple Rd. at Haggerty Rd.
