Ask the Orthodontist How to Care For Your Braces – Part 2 The next step in taking care of braces is avoiding the foods that can break them or pull them off. Gum is not recommended. Do not chew on ice and avoid hard or sticky candies. Other foods to avoid are again anything that is sticky, gooey or overly crunchy. Hard foods that you have to bite with the front teeth can knock off a bracket. To be safe, cut up apples, carrots and other food like these into small pieces. Ask the Orthodontist Alexander-Berlow D iane and Steven Berlow of Farmington Hills and Sara and Howard Alexander of Newtown Square, Pa., formerly of Syracuse, N.Y., are thrilled to announce the engagement of their children Jessica Berlow and Jonathan Alexander. Sharing in the couple’s happi- ness are their siblings Jason Berlow (fiance of Hilary Wolf) and Hannah Alexander. Jessica is a graduate of Michigan State University and is an employee relations consultant for Lincoln Financial Group. Jonathan is a graduate of Temple University and is a regional marketing director for Lincoln Financial Group. The couple reside in Philadelphia and are planning a summer 2016 wedding in Novi. Dr. Nelson Hersh Dr. Marsha Beattie Dr. Amy Isenberg Licensed Specialists for Children & Adults West Bloomfield Commerce Township 248.926.4100 Located in the Lakes Medical Building Waterford 248-673-4100 If a bracket does fall off, the orthodontist will attach another bracket. However, every time the orthodontist has to replace a bracket, it extends the orthodontic treatment longer and can also prevent obtaining an ideal result. If you swallow a bracket that has fallen off it is not a serious problem. Brackets are made of a medical grade stainless steel, which just passes through your digestive system. If the orthodontist has installed any orthodontic equipment that you have to wear or adjust, do it exactly as he/she says. If you don’t it could delay getting your braces off for months. If you are wearing rubber bands to manipulate your bite, change them as prescribed. You should take off your rubber bands before each meal and put in new ones after you are done eating and also before you go to bed. Taking proper care of the health of your teeth and protecting your braces is expected during orthodontic treatment. You will be glad you followed your orthodontist’s directions exactly when you get your braces off on time! Drs. Hersh, Beattie and Isenberg invite you to join our patient family.
