At 11 years old, Lorraine began lifelong friendships with seven girlfriends when they formed the WAGANS club. She graduated from Wayne State University and studied occupational therapy. She had a loving marriage for 66 years to Elliot I. Schubiner, (son of the late Moritz and Lilian Schubiner, brother of Sheldon and the late Barbara Schubiner). Lorraine raised her children, Howard (Val Overholt), Sue Michlin (Dan Schottenfels), and Jeffrey (Adrienne Leigh), with complete and unconditional love. She was a devoted daughter and lived with her mother for almost all of her life. After her beloved sister passed away in 1963, she mothered her four nephews, Joel, Steven, Michael and Gary Fabian. Lorraine was president of the Detroit chapter of the City of Hope Cancer Fighters charity twice and was appointed to its national board. She and Elliot created an endowment that will give money to Jewish organizations in perpetuity. Lorraine gave insightful advice to her whole family. She had great love for her grandchildren, Lindsay (Prerna Lal) Schubiner, Gabriel Schubiner, Dylan and Jenna Michlin, Clayton and Garrett Schubiner; and they enjoyed spending time with her. Everyone was welcome in her home as she hosted and cooked for every holiday. She lived a good and long life and was not afraid of death. At one point, Howard urged her to get more medical treatment, stating that we would miss her greatly. She simply said, “You’ll miss me now or you’ll miss me later.” And as usual, she was right: We do miss her now and we will miss her forever. Contributions in her name may be made to the City of Hope or Jewish Family Services. Interment was held at the Clover Hill Park Cemetery in Birmingham. Arrangements by Dorfman Chapel.
