While it is still early in the race, there is a good chance that the Democratic candidate will be a woman, Hillary Clinton. And, should she win the nomina- tion and general election, Clinton would be this nation’s first female president. Moreover, in 2015, there were 104 women in Congress and about 1,800 women in 50 state legislatures. But, it wasn’t always so. In 1992, Michigan had just one woman in Congress, Barbara Rose-Collins. While doing a bit of research, I found a most interesting article from the July 24, 1992 JN. It was titled “Women at the Helm” and discussed women as an emerging political force in Michigan and America. The article focused on Jewish women in Detroit who decided to do something about women’s low participation in poli- tics, beginning with a lunch attended by Lanie Pincus, Michigan State Rep. Maxine Berman and State Sen, Lana Pollack (the only Jewish women in the state legislature at the time), Judith Slatkin, Linda Soberman and Zina Kramer. This is good reading for anyone inter- ested in the impact of Jewish women in politics, which has led to the progress we see today. * Want to learn more?
