Bingham

(Liam James) showed up in town, grown
up and very much alive. Adam reappeared
just before Claire began her campaign.
However, there are doubts that the guy
who claims to be Adam really is Adam.
Zach Gilford, 34, (Matt Saracen in Friday
Night Lights) plays Danny Warren, Claire’s
older son. Gilford, a Chicago-area native
who worked at a Michigan YMCA camp,
is the son of a Jewish father and a non-
Jewish mother. (Again, my sense is that he’s
secular). The other tribe member in Family
is Margot Bingham, 26, playing police
sergeant Nina Meyer. Meyer’s career soared
after she put Hank in jail for Adam’s murder.

Israeli-American virtuoso cellist Amit
Peled brings a special treat to his Pro
Musica performance at 7:30 p.m. Friday,
March 4, in the Music Box at the Max M.
and Marjorie S. Fisher Music Center in
Detroit: He will be playing “Pablo” — a
1733 Matteo Gofriller cello personally
loaned to him by Marta Casals Istomin,
the widow of legendary maestro Pablo
Casals. Peled will be accompanied by
pianist Elizabeth Borowsky in a program
including Kol Nidre by Max Bruch, From
Jewish Life by Ernst Bloch, Kaddish by
Mark Kopytman, Hungarian Rhapsody
by David Popper, Suite No. 3 by Bach
and more. $25/theater seating; $45/
cabaret seating. All tickets include an
afterglow reception with the artists in
the Orchestra Hall Atrium at the Max.

The series was created by
Jenna Banns, 40, a Scandal
writer (she’s married to
Justin Spitzer, 38, who
oversees the NBC series
Superstore). A source close
to Banns and Spitzer told
me that Bingham is the
daughter of an African-
American Methodist father
and a Jewish mother. This
fact is not in many other
sources — but there is
a YouTube video inter-
view from 2013 in which
Bingham says: “I am a flat-out Jew. I had
a bat mitzvah and all.” Who is Margot
Bingham? Well, if you watched Boardwalk
Empire, you know her as Daughter
Maitland, a star character who lit up the
series with her beauty and terrific singing
voice. The series was set in the 1920s, and
she did great covers of period songs in a
nightclub setting. I was a big fan before
I knew she is Jewish! Go to YouTube and
enter her name to watch many of her
Empire and other singing clips. She also
sings soul, funk and jazz — usually under
the recording name “Margot B.”
