I just read that the two cities with teams in the Super Bowl experience an immediate increase in fl u cases after the
game. How can this be?

The Super Bowl is a wonderful opportunity to gather with fellow fans, friends, and family. It also creates an environment that increases the risk for
illnesses like infl uenza. Whenever large numbers of people come together from different parts of the country in a concentrated community, that
further compounds the risk of mixing viruses and exposure for everybody involved. Studies have shown that the cities of the two teams participating
in the Super Bowl each year do see a spike in infl uenza during the period leading up to and after the Super Bowl.

And what about every other city on Super Bowl Sunday?

The activity is not quite as high as the home cities of the two teams in the big game, but any event or party where large groups of people gather in
close quarters during the course of fl u season will increase the risk of illness. This is particularly true in colder climate cities. And since the Super Bowl
is always held during the peak of fl u season, that helps contribute to a noticeable spike in infl uenza illness throughout the country during this time
each year.

Gathering around the big screen with lots of fi nger foods to share offers a prime setting for germs to spread. Sharing common foods and beverages
enhances the opportunity to contract the illness. This is a great time for party hosts to implement a “no double dipping rule” and provide an ample
supply of hand sanitizers in convenient locations around the house.

Is it too late to get a fl u shot this year?

It is defi nitely not too late to get your 2016 fl u season vaccine. The most recent data from the Michigan Department of
Community Health indicates that we are just beginning to see a more active spread of infl uenza in our community. Current
studies have also shown that this year's vaccine is a good match for the strain of infl uenza that is currently active.

If you or a family member still has not received this year's infl uenza vaccine, contact your primary care physician or come to
Lakes Urgent Care to get your vaccine as soon as possible. Getting vaccinated and practicing good hand hygiene with frequent
handwashing using either soap and water or a hand sanitizer are the two most prominent things you can do to prevent
contracting infl uenza or spreading other viral illnesses.
