both entities in Farmington Hills. Perlman also got involved with scouting on the district level. Perlman’s first encounter with B’nai B’rith was bowling with Detroit Lodge in 1970. He rose through the leadership ranks and in 1987 was automatically placed on the B’nai B’rith International Board of Governors at the same time as he was Detroit Council president. In the 1990s, Perlman followed David Bittker as fundraising chair- man and became president of B’nai B’rith District 6, comprising Michigan and seven other states. In 2008-09, he was president of Great Lakes Region. He helped establish the region’s B’nai B’rith Golf Classic, now in its 34th year. “For the last five years, I was national fundraising chairman again,” Perlman said. “In November 2015, I was appointed by Gary Saltzman, president of B’nai B’rith International, to be chairman of the Executive Board of Directors.” Perlman and a 10-person mission are going soon to discuss chal- lenges and human rights issues at the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva. In May, Perlman and a small team of community leaders will meet with heads of gov- ernment to discuss Jewish issues in Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay. They include preventing and elimi- nating anti-Semitism, the countries’ relationships with Iran on the nuclear side and the international boycott of Israeli products. “We will educate the countries about Israel’s goals, tell them about medical care given to Palestinians, tell them the media may not be giving them the true story about Israel,” he said. “I love this organization and everything it does,” Perlman said. “When it comes to the principle of tikkun olam — to repair the world — B’nai B’rith provides an everyday opportunity.” * B’NAI B’RITH DINNER 6-9 pm, March 16.
