MASTERS OF MUSIC

Beginning March 12, the Detroit Opera
Theatre will present Aaron Copland’s
quintessential American opera The
Tender Land. As a special preview, excerpts
will be featured in a one-time performance of
Masters of Music: Copland and His
Contemporaries 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 21, at the
Berman Center for the Performing Arts at the West
Bloomfield JCC. Presented by the Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit in partnership with MOT, Jewish
Masters of Music will pay tribute to America’s great-
est 20th-century Jewish composers, highlighting the
music of Copland, along with George Gershwin,
Leonard Bernstein, Stephen Sondheim
and others. The concert will include historical notes and
stories narrated by Howard Lupovitch, associate
professor of history and director of the Cohn-Haddow
Center for Judaic Studies at Wayne State University. The
program will be a mix of iconic favorites in “celebration of

the words, images and sounds of American
culture as it was embraced by first- and
second-generation American Jewish
artists,” says Lupovitch, who provides
narrative intertwined between musical
performances, exploring how works such
as The Tender Land, West Side
Story and Follies offer windows into
the experience of Jewish immigrants and
their challenge of becoming part of the
American mainstream without giving
up their Jewish identity. Pieces will be
performed by resident artists of the Michigan Opera
Theatre Studio (thanks to a grant from the William
Davidson Foundation), including Angela Theis (soprano),
Raehann Bryce-Davis (mezzo-soprano), Joseph Michael
Brent (tenor), Jeff Byrnes (baritone) and Brent Michael
Smith (bass) with Gordon Schermer, the MOT Studio
