And chocolate makes it even sweeter.

explores Greece.

and lots of mini-size chocolate candy,
including Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups
and Kit Kats. The “artists,” who paid a $2
fee, supplied the conversation. Markers
and artistic suggestions passed back
and forth during the 90-minute-plus
session, followed by compliments and
self-satisfaction when the drawings were
done.
Many in the group thanked Menken for
providing this chance to relax, socialize
and be creative. The chocolate tasted
good, too.

n Feb. 7, Keter Torah
Synagogue hosted more than
90 guests for an educational
afternoon program about Greece’s
Sephardic Jewish history and its cui-
sine.
Rabbi Sasson Natan narrated a slide
presentation describing the expulsion
of Jews from Spain in 1492. Afterward,
family photos awakened fond memo-
ries and stories that were shared by
Thessaloniki-born Mary (Porffeta)
David and her son, Jacob.
Participants were treated to a typi-
cal Greek meal of fasolada, burekas,

salads, stuffed grape leaves and
sesame candy, all lovingly prepared
by chef Orly Gal, assisted by Shoshana
Janer. Rick Behar baked a delicious
baklava dessert. Busch’s Fresh Food
Market in Farmington Hills donated
ingredients.
The sixth Different Cultures,
Different Foods program in the series
was co-sponsored by StandWithUs-
Michigan, Anti-Defamation
League-Michigan Region, Greater
Detroit Chapter of Hadassah, Jewish
Community Relations Council and
ZOA Michigan Region.

ny program with the word
“chocolate” in it is bound to
be fun. And teamed up with
“coloring,” a current fad for adults, it’s no
wonder 18 winter-weary adventurers had
a fine afternoon at “Coloring, Chocolate
and Conversation.”
The first program in what may become
a series took place Jan. 21 in the Henry
and Delia Meyers Library and Media
Center at the Jewish Community Center
in West Bloomfield.
Librarian Francine Menken supplied
