ri Benjamin Mazer, 26,
of the San Francisco Bay
area, died Jan. 18, 2016,
after a 30-month battle with des-
moplastic small round cell tumor
(DSRCT), an extremely rare and
aggressive cancer that has been
diagnosed in just a few hundred
young adults and children.
Ari was employed with Parson’s
Engineering as an environmental
engineer in Pasadena, Calif., after
earning his chemical engineering
degree from UCLA.
He loved music, going to con-
certs with his devoted groups of
friends (especially their annual trip
to Coachella) and walks in Muir
Woods.
In Ari’s too-short life, he was
loved dearly by family and his many
friends. He made an impact on all
who loved him for his compassion,
sincerity and willingness to speak his
truth to them.
While being treated for this rare
cancer, Ari kept an online journal
that was inspirational. He wrote: “I
have cancer, and that is not some-
thing that I have control over. I do
have control over how I react to the
situation. And instead of seeing my
life as that of someone who is sick, I
choose to see my life as that of some-
one who is alive. I choose not to see
what was taken away from me for
over two years, but rather what was
given to me and what I have.
“Coming face-to-face with your
own death makes you realize an
absolute truth, which is hard to fully
comprehend and understand: We
own nothing; we deserve nothing;

we are guaranteed nothing. This
may seem like a depressing way to
look at life, but in saying these things
and really believing them, you real-
ize something: Everything that you
have, everything that you see and
do and feel — these are all blessings
that have been bestowed upon us.
“They are gifts and should be
appreciated as such. Everything
is temporary, and so for the brief
moment that you and someone else’s
paths intertwine, see it for what it is:
a miracle and blessing amongst the
chaos and randomness of life.”
Ari is survived and will be
remembered with the deepest of
love by many, including his parents
and sister, Marc Mazer, Susan Talon-
Mazer and Rachel Mazer, who all
reside in the San Francisco Bay area;
his dog, Sherlock; grandparents,
Bernard and Reva Talon of West
Bloomfield and Dotty Mazer; uncles,
aunts and immediate cousins, Larry
and Marianne Talon of Livonia,
Lyndsey and Sara Talon, Susan
Mazer and Dallas Smith, Aliza and
Bernie Weinberg; their children,
Joel, Ruthie and Evan.
Contribution checks may be made
payable to MD Anderson Cancer
Center (in the memo section, state
“Ari Mazer for Dr. Hayes Jordan
DSRCT Research.”) The funds then
will be specifically placed in an
identified memorial for Ari that will
be used for this research. Mail to
University of Texas, MD Anderson,
P.O Box 4486, Houston, TX 77210.

tion instructions, email arimazer.
