Lentil Mediterranean Grill

Fresh Food Fast

S

ometimes in the fast food
world change happens … fast.
In the last decade, restaurants
like McDonald’s and Burger King
have adapted to serve a more health-
conscious consumer, tweaking their
own menus or even creating new
brands.
Sometimes they’re not so
successful — case in point,
the new McDonald’s kale
salad, which happens to be
loaded with more fat and
calories than a double Big
Mac.
But one company that
found awe-inspiring suc-
cess was Chipotle, at least Ryan
Fishman
until last year’s E. coli
debacle, which has forced
the restaurant to reevaluate how it
does business.
The concept, however, has also
proven wildly successful for many
smaller restaurateurs who want to
offer fresh food, prepared to order, but
fast enough to attract the lunch break
crowd that might otherwise opt for a
Whopper or Quarter Pounder.
Locally, the newest Chipotle-esque
restaurant to offer fresh food fast is
Lentil Mediterranean Grill in Royal
Oak (29110 Woodward). Given the
name, it should be no surprise Lentil
is offering Mediterranean classics like
shawarma and falafel in a swiftly pre-
pared sandwich or bowl made to order,
with your choice of toppings.
Step up to the counter and choose
your pita (white or wheat) or your rice
for a bowl (white or brown) then fill it
up with a meat or veggie and top it off
with options like pickles, turnips, tur-
shi (pickled cabbage), hummus, garlic
and tahini.
Pair your entree with the house-
made lentil soup or chicken lemon
rice, and definitely don’t miss their
delicious fattoush salad. Choose tradi-
tional or the Lentil’s signature fattoush,
which gets tossed with feta cheese
and their delicious house dressing. If
you’ve got a sweet tooth, they’ve got
you covered with plenty of baklava or
cinnamon-sugar pita chips.
If you love the food as much as I
did, Lentil’s not only caters or scales its

COMFORT FOOD
Some foods are just better together.
Think spaghetti and meatballs or
peanut butter and jelly. And,
of course, grilled cheese and
tomato soup. That classic com-
fort food pairing has found a
few homes in Metro Detroit,
but hopefully Tom+Chee will
stick around. The Cincinnati-
headquartered chain is opening
its second area location in Troy
this week (307 E. Big Beaver).
Their first store opened last
summer in Northville.
The restaurant started with fairly
humble beginnings, frankly about as
humble as you can get — a simple
three-sided food tent in a public
square in Cincinnati. After some seri-
ous TV exposure on ABC’s Shark Tank,
things took off and, soon enough, the
founders were featured on everything
from The Chew to Man v. Food and the
Today show on NBC.
Offering more than 25 sandwiches
and salads, macaroni and cheese, and
three varieties of tomato soup; the res-
taurant also boasts house-made dress-
ings, sauces and spreads from scratch,
and they even roast their own meats.
The restaurant also offers gluten-free
bread, vegan cheese, and a rotating
assortment of seasonal vegetarian and
vegan soups to guarantee anyone can
try their product.
For the truly daring, don’t miss their
grilled cheese donuts (the restaurant
promises they will “change your life”).
They are exactly what the name sug-
gests — a combination of cheese and
toppings piled on a donut.
