REMEMBERING
REV. KING

Chuck Stokes, WXYZ-
TV public affairs/edi-
torial director, center,
shared his fascinating
family history with
Rev. Martin Luther
King Jr. at the MLK
Commemoration with
employees at the Max
M. Fisher Federation
Building in Bloomfield
Township. At the pro-
gram hosted by the
Jewish Community
Relations Council,
Stokes is shown with
JCRC Executive Director David
Kurzmann and President Dr. Richard
Krugel.
Stokes’ late father, U.S. Rep. Louis
Stokes of Cleveland, was a civil rights
pioneer who had close relations with
Cleveland’s Jewish community. His
uncle Carl, a mayor of Cleveland, was

the first African American mayor of a
major American city.
In his remarks, Krugel recalled Dr.
King’s support for Israel and his friend-
ship with Jews. Stokes said the civil
rights movement might not have been
successful without the Jewish commu-
nity’s support.
