NEW VEHICLE PRICES
UP FROM LAST YEAR

MOTORCITIES CELEBRATES
NATIONAL PARK SERVICE

The analysts at Kelley Blue Book
say the estimated average trans-
action price for light vehicles in
the United States was $34,112 in
January 2016, an increase of $919
(up 2.8 percent) from January
2015 but down $553 (down 1.6
percent) from last month.
“Growing transaction prices
reflect growing consumer prefer-
ence in trucks and SUVs,” said
Tim Fleming, analyst for Kelley
Blue Book. “ Consideration in
these segments also is helped
by the country’s lowest gas
prices since 2009, a trend which is
expected to last through year-end.
Meanwhile, transaction prices for
full-size trucks increased 5.9 per-
cent and 7.9 percent for mid-size
trucks.”

As the National Park Service prepares to
mark 100 years in August, park leaders
seek to honor the past century as well as
cultivate new generations of visitors.
As a nonprofit affiliate of the National
Park Service, the MotorCities National
Heritage Area will lead a series of projects
to showcase the automotive history and
labor story that has had such a significant
impact on Southeast Michigan and beyond.
MotorCities has been working on Find
Your Road Trip magazine, due out this
spring. MotorCities will encourage adven-
turers to chart their own path, blaze their
own trail and discover the state’s unique
automotive history and venture into
National Park sites across the state.
MotorCities NHA is also promoting NPS
programs such as Every Kid in a Park, an
initiative that offers fourth-graders across
the country free admission to any federally
owned land for an entire year.

Automakers also fear that millen-
nials have less incentive to meet their
friends in person because they can
communicate constantly through
social media and smartphones.
Only 24.5 percent of 16-year-olds

TOYOTA SCRAPS SCION BRAND

31260 Wakefi eld, Novi, MI (South side of 14 Mile Rd between Welch and Novi Rd)

A little more than 3 in 4 people who
were 20 to 24 years old in 2014 had a
driver’s license, according to a report
from the University of Michigan
Transportation Research Institute.
The figure — 76.7 percent — is
down from 79.7 percent in 2011, 82
percent in 2008 and 91.8 percent
in 1983, according to the report by
Michael Sivak and Brandon Schoettle.
The emergence of ride-sharing ser-
vices such as Uber and Lyft provides
a reasonable alternative for many col-
lege students and young professionals
— particularly in dense urban areas
where such apps are most popular.

Scion, a brand created in 2003 to attract
youth customers, is on its way out and
those vehicles will transition to the
Toyota brand.
“This isn’t a step backward for Scion;
it’s a leap forward for Toyota. Scion has
allowed us to fast track ideas that would
have been challenging to test through the
Toyota network,” said Jim Lentz, found-
ing vice president of Scion and now CEO,
Toyota Motor North America.
“I was there when we established
Scion and our goal was to make Toyota
and our dealers stronger by learning
how to better attract and engage young
customers. I’m very proud because
that’s exactly what we have accom-
plished.”

As part of the brand transition,
beginning in August 2016, MY17 Scion
vehicles will be rebadged as Toyotas.
The service and repair process for
Scion customers will be unaffected by
this change as customers will continue
to visit Toyota dealerships’ service
departments.
