arold Grossbart called it his best
night of bowling.
“By far,” he said.
It also was one of the best nights in the
57-year history of the Brotherhood-Eddie
Jacobson B’nai B’rith League.
Grossbart rolled 270-277-255—802 on
Jan. 25 at Country Lanes in Farmington
Hills. It was only the
fifth 800 series bowled
in the league and the
fourth highest.
It was the first 800
series for Grossbart,
62, who says he’s been
bowling competitively
for at least 25 years,
Harold
including the last

six or seven in the
Brotherhood-Eddie
Jacobson League.
“I thought about an 800 series a little
bit during my final game,” he said. “After I
threw a spare in the ninth frame, I looked
at the scoreboard and saw I’d need two
strikes and an eight count to do it.”
The certified public accountant and
Farmington resident accomplished his
goal in style, rolling three straight strikes
in the 10th frame.
“I had 30 strikes in three games, and
all were perfect pocket hits,” he said. “I
was extremely surprised to bowl an 800
series. I think that’s tougher to do than
bowl a 300 game.”
Grossbart hasn’t bowled a perfect
game. He’s come within a final strike
twice, including last year when he rolled a
288 in league play. He’s averaging 206.
His teammates on the Motor City
Hitmen squad in the Brotherhood-
Eddie Jacobson League are his son Jason
Grossbart, Rick Sherline and Stu Epstein.

runs, 1,000 runs and RBIs, 400 doubles, a
.280 batting average and 150 stolen bases.
The others were Barry Bonds, Ken Griffey
Jr. and Gary Sheffield.
He drove in at least 100 runs four
times, scored at least 100 runs four times,
hit 40 or more home runs three times, led
the league in doubles, extra-base hits and
total bases, won Gold Glove and Silver
Slugger awards, and was a two-time All-
Star.
Green played for Toronto, Los Angeles,
Arizona and the New York Mets. He
missed games on Yom Kippur, even when
his team was embroiled in a pennant
race.
Gage was the Detroit News’ beat writer
for the Tigers from 1979-2015. He retired
from the paper in March 2015 after being
re-assigned from the Tigers beat.
He received the J.G. Taylor Spink
Award in 2015, the highest award given
out by the Baseball Writers’ Association
of America.
The Greenberg Invitational is June
13 at Franklin Hills Country Club in
Farmington Hills. For ticket information,
