The Bloomfield Hills-based Force has lost twice in the semifinals (2013 and 2015) and once in the finals (2014) after qualifying from the Midwest Region, but Green isn’t complaining. “Coming so close to winning a nation- al championship each year was frustrat- ing for the moment; but overall, going to the nationals has been worth it,” she said. “The competition has been good, and it’s been a great team bonding experience for us.” Green is a Berkley High School junior and Huntington Woods resident. She was a member of the Force U16 girls team that competed in the nationals last month at the IMG Academy in Bradenton. After winning Emma Green twice and tying in its first three games, the Force lost 2-1 to the eventual champion Washington (D.C.) Spirit in the semifi- nals of the 16-team competition. Green has been playing for the Force for nine years. Besides improving her soccer skills in her time in the organiza- tion, she said she’s enjoyed the team camaraderie and trips to tournaments across the Midwest and Florida. The 5-foot-4 Green is a left-side defender for the Force. She plays the same position for the Berkley High girls soccer team. This spring will mark her third season with the Bears. Intercollegiate soccer isn’t in her future. Green said she’s interested in attending the University of Michigan, studying kinesiology and playing club or intramural soccer there. TIME TO APPLY The application deadline is April 1 for the Michigan Jewish Sports Foundation’s new Stars of Tomorrow scholarship program. High school seniors who are excel- ling athletically and academically can apply. Five scholarships — each worth $1,000 — will be awarded in the pro- gram’s first year. “We think the program is off to a successful start,” said David Blatt, the foundation’s executive director. “We’d like to give out even more scholarships each year. That will depend upon our fundraising.” Scholarship candidates will be judged by a selection committee on several factors including athletic and academic achievements, community service, extra- curricular activities and financial need. “We’re looking for well-rounded young people,” Blatt said. The initial scholarship recipients will be announced in May and probably honored at a breakfast at the founda- tion’s Hank Greenberg Memorial Golf Invitational on June 13 at Franklin Hills Country Club. The recipients also prob- ably will be recognized at the event din- ner that night. A plaque with recipients’ names will hang at the Michigan Jewish Sports Hall of Fame, sponsored by the foundation, at the Jewish Community Center in West Bloomfield. The scholarship application can be downloaded from the foundation’s website, www.michiganjewishsports. org. For more information, contact Blatt at dblatt@michiganjewishsports.org or (248) 592-9323. The foundation is a not-for-profit organization committed to supporting cancer charities and benefitting youth.
