n 1992, Shine Light in Darkness
came to light. Inspired by Dr.
Mark Diem, the program was
created with the blessing of the late
Rabbi Irwin Groner and Col. Clarence
Harvey of the Salvation Army.
Over the past 23 years, the program
has continued through the leadership
of the Shaarey Zedek Men’s Club, with
the help of thousands of volunteers,
both Jewish and non-Jewish.
Volunteers prepare, package and
deliver meals to non-Jewish friends in
the community on Christmas. From
1992, when the first 500 meals were
delivered before GPS and comput-

ers, to this year, volunteers prepared,
packaged and delivered 5,280 meals in
partnership with Forgotten Harvest.
This year’s event was paid for by a
gift from “Lucille,” who is 103 years
old. Lucille’s benevolence demonstrates
you’re never too old to give or make a
difference.
Col. Clarence Harvey sent this greet-
ing on Christmas morning: “Thinking
of you today and thanking God for
your many years of servicing others on
this our special day. You have shown
our community that we are all broth-
ers and sisters in God’s sight.”
