Temple Shir Shalom in West Bloomfield will sponsor its sixth annual Chicken Soup Cook-Off from noon-1:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 31, at the Corners, 2075 Walnut Lake Road, West Bloomfield. Stop by to sample many chicken soups and vote for the People’s Choice Award. Judges will bestow other awards for best chicken noodle, matzah ball and contem- porary soups. Entries come from restau- rants, individuals and families. Even Shir Shalom preschoolers will serve their own chicken soup creation. The cook-off is the brainchild of Rabbi Daniel Schwartz, who says the event is not only fun, but also raises money for such organizations as I Am My Bother’s Keeper Ministries: Detroit Homeless Shelter, Team Alex and Make-A-Wish, and Shir Shalom’s young adult group and religious school scholarships. Last year, more than 500 people attended and $4,566 was raised. Cost is $5 for adults and $3 for children ages 5-12, with children 4 and under free — or an entire family for $15.
