JDAIM: Jewish Disability
Awareness & Inclusion Month

SECULAR JEWISH
TOUR OF ISRAEL

Birmingham Temple in Farmington Hills
is offering a Secular Humanistic Jewish
experience in Israel from June 12-26.
The unique itinerary, arranged with
Medji Tours, will take participants to
Israel and also the Palestinian territories.
The emphasis will be on exploring each
people’s history and communities through
multiple perspectives.
Birmingham Temple Rabbi Jeffrey
Falick, who has lived in Israel and led
many tours there, will be joined alter-
nately by two guides, one Jewish and
one Muslim. They will accompany the
group to significant sites, cosmopolitan
cities and scenic landscapes of the diverse
region with a emphasis on understanding
them through the eyes of its residents.
Contemporary issues will be accessed
through storytelling, relationship-building
and discussions with conflict resolution
professionals. The speakers will be Israeli
and Palestinian, Christian, Jewish, Muslim
and Druze, with viewpoints conservative,
moderate and progressive. The group will
discover how conflict affects environmen-
tal concerns in the Dead Sea Valley, enjoy
home-cooked cuisine with local families,
explore ancient archaeological sites and
visit bustling bazaars.
The land portion is $3,440, double
occupancy, with a $300 deposit due by
Jan. 30. Airfare from Detroit is additional.
An optional pre-trip extension to ancient
Petra, Jordan, is available from June 10-13.
For information, contact Falick at
rabbi@birminghamtemple.com or (248)

JUDAISM’S SPIRITUAL
AND SECULAR SIDES

The Dead Sea Scrolls, Sigmund Freud’s
Jewishness, rituals in the movement to
free Soviet Jews and the Jewish revival in
Poland. These fascinating topics will be
explored in a new lecture series that offers
a look at the complex world of the spiri-
tual and secular and how they intersect.
“Wrestling with Angels: The Struggle
between Sacred and Secular in Jewish
Life,” will be presented at the Jewish
Community Center in West Bloomfield
by scholars of the University of Michigan’s
Frankel Institute for Advanced Judaic
Studies, and in partnership with JCC’s
Seminars for Adult Jewish Enrichment
(SAJE) and the Federation’s FedEd.
Lectures will take place Wednesday
evenings in February at 7 p.m., and will
feature Professors Eva Mroczek of the
University of California, Davis; Shaul
Kelner of Vanderbilt University; and Scott
Spector and Genevieve Zubrzycki of U-M.
