Rustic elements are added to contemporary design, bringing interest and
texture to the kitchen of this Birmingham home. “We broke the kitchen up
into vignettes and gave the cooking area its own wall, which really draws
you in,” says Ben Heller, residential designer and partner of Morgan-Heller
Associates in Pontiac. Pamela Singer Nodel, owner of Pamela Singer &
Associates in Orchard Lake, added a handmade subway-tile backsplash
surrounded by a smooth expanse of mitered Calacatta marble to a series of
sunken arches that create a cooking niche. Barstools backed with heavily
grained but subtly washed wood bring an organic quality to the space. A
stepped ceiling with cove molding and lengths of beadboard become a
design element.
