Sports Hall Of Fame

Local Jewish athletes honored.

T

he Michigan Jewish Sports
Foundation (MJSF) induct-
ed its 2015 Hall of Fame
class, Pillars of Excellence, Alvin Foon
Humanitarian recipient and the Jewish
News Male and Female Athletes of
the Year in late October at the Jewish
Community Center in West Bloomfield.
Proceeds from the event will benefit
the Stars of Tomorrow scholarship
program, Maccabi Detroit at the JCC
and the Michigan Jewish Sports Hall of
Fame.
Hall of Famers included Dale Katz,

Mark Cahn and Karen Green Simon.
Pillars of Excellence Awards honor
lifetime achievement and outstand-
ing contributions to athletics and the
enrichment of the community. They
included Stephen Bernstein, Robert
Gershman, Irvin Horwitz, Edward
Kozloff, and the late Harold Kutnick and
the late Mort Levitsky.
Jewish News Athletes of the Year
were Emily Fisher from
Detroit Country Day
School, and co-honorees
Griffin Mertz from North
Farmington High School
and Jonathan Radner
from Berkley High
Jonathan
School.

Humanitarian Award
honoree was Vinnie Johnson, former
Detroit Piston and CEO, Piston Group.
On hand were Ron Foon and Shirley
Wiss Foon. The award was presented
by Jeff Sakwa, a close friend of Johnson
and a MJSF volunteer.

Meet Rachel Mirsky from White Plains, New York. A biology major on

a pre-med track, and captain of the YU softball and basketball teams,

Rachel chose YU to allow her to explore and develop her unique talents

and interests.

Rachel loves YU because it enables her to engage in her extracurricular

passions and prepare for her career while remaining true to her

religious commitments. An exceptional athlete, Rachel was recently

named to the Capital One Academic All-District team. Whether in

an Israeli laboratory conducting research on the properties of red

blood cells, or authoring a medical ethics paper on eating disorders
