Wahlburgers Set
For Greektown

I

f you're not watching A&E's
Wahlburgers, then you might not
realize after the Funky Bunch dis-
banded, its former front man opened
a burger chain popular across much
of the Northeast, Florida and Nevada.
Now Mark Wahlberg and his brothers
Donnie and Paul (their chef) are bring-
ing Wahlburgers to Greektown. It's part
of their plan to add some 150 locations
to their growing burger empire in the
next five years.
There's no word on an
address or timeframe yet, but
Bedrock Real Estate's Dan
Mullen confirmed the move
last week after the star made
the big reveal in an interview
with Fox 2's Lee Thomas
while promoting his new Will
Ferrell comedy Daddy's Home. Ryan
Fishman
Boasting farm-fresh beef
and artisan buns, the chain's
menu proves this isn't your average
burger joint — offering everything
from a Thanksgiving-inspired turkey
burger, to a Panko-crusted haddock
filet, all-beef hotdogs, salads and, of
course, their basic burger with "wahl
sauce pickles and onions.

Jersey Bagels

BIG BAGELS
If you're looking for a bagel even Tony
Soprano would call a hit, look no fur-
ther than Jersey Bagel (33220 W. 14
Mile Road at Farmington). The West
Bloomfield spot is a Garden State
import, though its owners are Long
Island natives. It's the first Michigan
venture from a pair of female entrepre-
neurs busy operating seven more bagel
shops across New Jersey. Manager Sam
Abdo previously oversaw operations
in his native New Jersey; doors opened
in November. My friend Allan Lengel
of Deadline Detroit, a serious bagel
connoisseur, says the bagels are big,
reminiscent of a true New York bagel
and, most importantly, "crunchy on the
outside and chewy on the inside."

Detroit.

AVALON EXPANDING
If you love Avalon International Breads,

you're in luck. The popular Midtown
bakery's owners have announced plans to
open a cafe just north of Campus Martius
Park with an expanded menu next sum-
mer (1049 Woodward Ave.). Hearth and
Soul will feature seasonal breakfast, lunch
and dinner options from new execu-
tive chef Maggie Long, alongside their
celebrated breads, pastries, sandwiches
and coffees. Bedrock Real Estate
Services owns and manages the
2,900-square-foot space, and the
new project will allow Avalon to
create another 25 jobs in the heart
of Detroit.

ZINGERMAN'S IS
EXPANDING, TOO

Zingerman's will expand its reach
next summer with plans for a new
Korean restaurant in Ann Arbor
(415 N. Fifth Ave.). The unnamed project
will partner the famous deli's team with
Ji Hye Kim, owner of the popular San
Street food truck — a business venture
also backed by Zingerman's. The menu's
focus won't be on fancy, but instead on
traditional recipes — like bibimbap and
mandu — and quality ingredients. Beer
and wine will also be served.

GOURMET SLIDERS
Earlier this month, the city of
Birmingham approved plans for Sidecar,
the latest concept from the owners of
Rojo Mexican Bistro. The "gourmet
slider" concept with a long bar will
occupy the former Custom Elegance space
on Merrill Street, right next door to Rojo.
The restaurants will share a single Class C
liquor license, and the 1,800-square-foot
space is expected to seat 91 — with plenty
of room at the bar and some 16 seats of
seasonal outdoor dining on its adjacent
sidewalk. Owners have compared their
plans to Detroit's Green Dot Stables and
hope to bring a new late-night crowd to a
street they say is typically dead after dark.

MAZEL TOV TO ...
Josh Moss and Brittany Gonte on their
engagement.
Stephanie Horwitz, who completed
her service in the IDF.
And happy birthday to Brandon
Schram, Nate Fink, Mark Menuck,
Craig Menuck, Sheri Schiff, Dustin
Fink, Adam Steuer and Ian Pesses
(happy belated!). *
