FOR THE REST OF US

MAGICAL HOLIDAZE

A tip of the hat to Seinfeld's Frank Costanza
(played by Jerry Stiller) for dreaming up
an alternative wintertime holiday: Head
to Festivus ... A Party for the Rest of
Us for music, including Howling Diablos
and Detroit Cobras (who Rolling Stone
called "the go-to party band for those in
the know"), celebrity Airing of Grievances,
Feats of Strength (including a Beer Hoisting
Contest) and a Festivus Pole unveiling
— plus tons of indoor concessions, food
trucks, beer and cocktails. The best part:The
party benefits South Oakland Shelter. 5 p.m.
Saturday, Dec. 19, at the Royal Oak Farmers
Market. $15. Festivustix.com .

Soaring acrobatics, gravity-defying feats,
elaborate production numbers — and tons
of glistening holiday cheer — return to the
Fox Theatre (after being sold out the last
two years) Dec. 22-27 with Cirque Dreams
Holidaze. Created by Broadway director
Neil Goldberg, the stunning, high-energy
production features more than 300 cos-
tumes, 20 acts and 30 artists from around
the world. Tickets start at $29. (800) 745-
3000; olympiaentertainment.com .

who also is a screenwriter. In 1975, after
about five years working as a Detroit
advertising copywriter, he sold the
script for The Bodyguard and moved to
Los Angeles. But he's maintained per-
sonal and charitable ties to Michigan:

Force is a biggie for J.J. Abrams, 66,
the film's director and co-screenwriter.
Yes, he did a good job re-booting the
Star Trek and Mission Impossible series
— but he's not viewed as a first-rank tal-
ent like his mentor, Steven Spielberg,
68. He may vault into that rarified air if
Force really blows away fans and crit-
ics. As noted in a recent Esquire profile,
Abrams grew up before the "digital age"
and he strove to give Force a retro look

that contrasts it with
the many CGI special-

that now no longer

The Force's special
effects are mostly not
CGI and the movie
wasn't shot digitally,
but on real film stock.
Sisters sounds like
a hoot: Tina Fey and
Amy Poehler (who
wed comic Nick Kroll,
37, in 2013), co-star as
sisters whose parents are downsiz-
ing and summon them to take away
their stuff. Their trip home becomes an
excuse for a big blow-out party for their
old hometown friends. Co-stars include
Ike Barinholtz, 37, (playing James, the
main male character and Poehler's love
interest ) and Maya Rudolph, 43, as the
sisters' oldest friend.
Fun fact to know and tell — there's
nothing very Jewish about the new
Chipmunks' movie, The Road Trip — but
it does share the tidbit that the trio
(Alvin, Theodore and Simon) bear the
first names of three Jewish record exec-
utives who headed up Liberty Records,
the company that released the first
Chipmunks' record. *
