Shining Light

Menorah in the D draws thousands Downtown.

T

housands of people filled Detroit's
Campus Martius Dec. 6 to celebrate the
first night of Chanukah and watch as a
26-foot-tall menorah was lit to shine the light of
the holiday over Downtown Detroit. The menorah
remained lit through Dec. 11.
Jewish community leaders and Mayor Mike
Duggan stood on a mechanical lift to light the
candle as onlookers said blessings.
"It seems so appropriate that we're lighting the
menorah — a symbol of hope — at a time when the
city is so full of hope,' Duggan said.
This year's Menorah in the D featured many

activities, including a new 300-foot zip line, live
entertainment, food, games and crafts as well as
complimentary marshmallows to roast over barrel
fires.
Rabbi Kasriel Shemtov of The Shul-Chabad
Lubavitch in West Bloomfield said the lighting of
the menorah symbolizes the light of godliness and
goodness that is within us all.
The event was sponsored by The Shul in partner-
ship with the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan
Detroit and Chabad in the "D" with support from
Quicken Loans and other sponsors. *
