JDAIM: Jewish Disability
Awareness & Inclusion Month

The Israel mission
included a morning
session with entre-
preneurs in joint
Arab-Jewish ventures
and incubators, and
an immersion visit
to ReLOD, a Detroit
Larry Wolfe
Federation-supported
program encouraging
students to live, work
and create change in the periphery. In
Lod, southeast of Tel Aviv, they met with
students and toured the mixed Jewish-
Arab city.
Sandy Pierce, FirstMerit Michigan
chairman and CEO, came away most
impressed with the culture of Israeli
entrepreneurship.
"They have no fear of failure and they
truly see failure as acceptable because
new ideas can be
formed from failure,"
Pierce said.
"In addition, it's
a culture that chal-
lenges authority,
where children are
taught from a young
age to question. It
Sandy Pierce
was very, very unique
to learn about the
tax incentives Israel has established to
incentivize startups and also to learn the
pathways Israel has created to welcome
immigrants over its history
"Three C's were displayed as we
learned about the infrastructure support-
ing new venture creation: cohesiveness,
collaboration and consistencY'
One immediate insight from the
Israeli startup successes is how the busi-
nesses immediately target global mar-
kets. Some of the early successes have
been acquired by multinationals includ-
ing Google, Apple and Intel, which use
those acquisitions to have an expanded
presence in Israel.
After meetings with 30-plus com-
panies, many contacts were shared
between the Israeli and Detroit leaders.
A reunion is already under way, and
brainstorming is taking place about civic,
philanthropic and business programs
that can advance the revitalization of the
greater Detroit community
Additional missions are already being
planned for leading chief financial offi-
cers and chief information officers in
Michigan.
And Mark Davidoff, with a resume
of roles across civic and Jewish life in
Detroit, continues to work as a catalyst
on behalf of Detroit, a city that's increas-
ingly being talked about, both here and
abroad. *
