ill it be Stephen Friedland or
Nolan Rogow?
In either case, there once
again will be a Jewish goalie working
between the pipes every night for the
Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook-Kingswood
High School hockey team.
Friedland and Rogow are vying to
be the starting goalie for the defend-
ing Division 3 state champion Cranes.
Whoever wins the job will replace the
graduated Spencer Applebaum, who was
18-3 last year with six shutouts, a 1.71
goals-against average and .916 save per-
centage.
"We haven't made a decision yet on
our starting goalie. We'll give both guys
an opportunity to win the job during the
first half of the season" said Cranbrook-
Kingswood coach Andy Weidenbach.
Some hockey coaches are comfortable
having goalies who split playing time, but
not Weidenbach.
"Ifs better to have a No. 1 goalie than
two No. 2's:' he said.
Applebaum was Weidenbaclis No. 1
goalie last season. Friedland and Rogow,
two of Applebaum's three backups, each
played in only one game, with Friedland
getting a shutout.
Friedland had the upper hand over
Rogow in the early going this season,
starting four of Cranbrook-Kingswood's
first five games.
One was a 3-0 shutout of Livonia
Stevenson on Nov. 27 on home ice at
Wallace Arena during the Cranbrook-
Kingswood Thanksgiving Tournament.
Friedland stopped 39 shots.
Rogow suffered a neck injury the next
night in the first period against Brighton
and had to taken out of the tournament
championship game. Brighton won 6-2.
"A Brighton player knocked him into
the net," Weidenbach said.
The coach said Friedland is playing with
confidence.
"He's doing a good job playing the
angles on shots, moving the puck and con-
trolling the game he said.
Cranbrook-Kingswood was 3-2 through
Nov. 28. The Cranes were 25-2-4 a year
ago as they won a record 17th Michigan
High School Athletic Association state
championship.

MORE ABOUT SARAH
Early Thanksgiving week deadlines and
logistical issues didn't allow the comple-

tion of an interview with Sarah Kovan, a
2016 Rhodes Scholar winner and women's
soccer player from Michigan State
University, who was profiled in this space
in the Dec. 3 edition.
After deadline, Kovan said she attended
the Hebrew University of Jerusalem
after her freshman year at MSU in sum-
mer 2013. She said she took classes that
focused on the history of Israel and its
current conflicts. The classes were titled,
"Emergence of the State of Israel" and
"Israeli Politics and Society."
She said the courses provided opportu-
nities to have discussions with other MSU
students studying at the university and
other university students and gave her "an
extremely insightful look into the com-
plexity of the conflicts:'
The Okemos resident will be pursuing
a two-year master's degree in develop-
ment studies with a focus on international
health at Oxford University in England
after she graduates next year from MSU
with bachelor's degrees in comparative
cultures and politics and human biology.
She's the 17th Rhodes Scholar in MSU
history.
