Chanukah art contest

Spirit Of The Holiday

Children's artwork captures the magic of Chanukah.

T

his year's judging of the Chanukah
art contest was one of the toughest
ever — there were so many worthy
entries! Due to her beautiful use of color, we
decided to choose the artwork submitted
by Naomi Lupovitch, age 11. We thought it
would look great on our cover.
Naomi, a sixth-grader at Hillel Day School
in Farmington Hills, was excited to learn she
had won this year's contest. It's not her first
win, however. When she was 6, she won for
her age group. For this year's submission, she
says she was inspired "by a lot of artwork I

have seen in the past — especially for the
background:'
"I drew the menorah with seven branches
instead of nine because I always loved the
story of Chanukah:' Naomi said. "Having
seven instead of nine makes it feel more like
Chanukah to me because the Maccabees had
it that way in the story:'
The budding artist, who lives in West
Bloomfield with parents, Jeffrey Lupovitch
and Alissa Citron, and siblings Miriam, Aviva
and Ezra, also likes to play piano and vol-
leyball. She and her family attend B'nai Israel

Synagogue, where she will be having her bat
mitzvah this summer, and Bais Chabad Torah
Center. Both shuls are in West Bloomfield.
She has her bubbie and grandpa, Janice
and Henry Citron, to thank for her win. Her
grandparents were the ones who reminded
her about the contest and physically brought
the submission to the Jewish News office
before the deadline.
Naomi doesn't know exactly what she will
do with her $100 winnings. "I'll probably give
some to tzedalcah," she says.
All of the other winners will receive $18. *

There's Still A
Chance To Win

We want to give our readers the

chance to pick their favorites from
this year's nearly 100 submissions.
Readers can vote online at www.
thejewishnews.com to pick their
favorites in each age category now
through Dec. 7. Top vote-getters will
receive $18 each and have their art-
work featured in the Dec. 10 issue.
