Historic Anniversary

Temple Beth El celebrates 165 years with a sold-out gala.

T

emple Beth El hosted a sold-out event
for 320 TBE members and friends
on Saturday, Nov. 7. The gala fea-
tured live entertainment, food and enduring
friendships.
"TBE165 co-chairs Traci Feldman, Melissa
Schiller and Anne Weiner created a chic and
unforgettable evening featuring comedian Dave
Coulier, a Michigan native, host of America's
Funniest People and a star of Full House said
Kim Raznik, Beth El executive director.
Attendees danced to live music by Detroit
band Collision Six, led by TBE members Sarah
and Matt Rappaport. Guests also laughed with
Coulier, enjoyed cocktails and a strolling din-

ner by Cutting Edge Cuisine, participated in a
live auction and walked down Temple Beth El's
memory lane.
The historical committee, led by Elaine
Schonberger and Cindy Bolokofsky, created the
Beth El Story, a multimedia presentation of the
temple's history. Together, with the help of Jan
Durecki of the Leo M. Franklin Archives, the
historical committee researched and compiled
images for a dozen posters and two videos.
The videos, created by Walter Meyer and
Cindy Bolokofsky, can be found on the temple's
Vimeo page: vimeo.com/145187191 and vimeo.

Holocaust Center hosts commemoration,
film debut on pogrom's 77th anniversary.

0

n the 77th anniversary of Kristallnacht, a two-day peri-
od of violence during which Jewish homes, businesses
and 1,300 synagogues throughout Nazi Germany,
annexed Austria and areas of the Sudetenland were plundered,
burned and destroyed, and 30,000 Jews were sent to concentration
camps, the Holocaust Memorial Center in Farmington Hills hosted
"The Night of Broken Glass: Kristallnacht Commemoration:"
During the Nov. 9 event, the 300 attendees viewed the world
debut of a short documentary, Kristallnacht, created by HMC
summer intern Daniel Cooper and featuring local Kristallnacht
survivors Edith Maniker, Rose Baum and Eric Billes. They also
heard a lecture by Dr. Derek Hastings, an associate history
professor at Oakland University, and a Q & A panel discussion
with Maniker, Hastings and Cooper. To complement the event,
the center's "Synagogues in Germany" exhibit was available for
viewing.
"Kristallnacht is widely considered as what set the Holocaust
into motion:' said HMC Executive Director Stephen Goldman. "It is
important that we continue to commemorate this tragedy and edu-
cate future generations about it to ensure it doesn't happen again" *
