explicit content that included graphic
descriptions of sexual contact with one
of the boys. A subsequent investigation
by the Oakland County Prosecutor's
office concluded there was no evidence
showing any of the boys had been
molested.
According to court records, Kuppe
denied sexually molesting any of the
campers but admitted to becoming
aroused after accidentally touching the
penis of one of the boys in the locker
room. Investigators also found more
than 60 downloaded pornographic
images of children 4 years and younger
on Kuppe's iPod, several of which were
downloaded in 2012.
"We have our children's well-being as
our top priority," the father of one of the
three boys, speaking on behalf of the
other parents, said exclusively to the JN.
"That being said, just because Oakland
County did not have enough evidence
to pursue a case does not mean noth-
ing happened. He [Kuppe] admitted to
touching one of our children and being
aroused by it:"
Kuppe's parents, Richard and Linda
Kuppe of West Bloomfield, submitted
affidavits to the court agreeing to moni-
tor their son around the clock and to
terminate the Internet service in their
home to comply with the conditions of
his bond.
In response to Kuppe's release, JCC
executive director Jim Issner said,
"We remain committed to the safety
and welfare of our families and pro-
gram participants. We will continue
to cooperate with authorities in this
matter, and we will leave it to the court
and prosecutor to manage this case in

ediation is an alternative that can help you retain more time, money,
and privacy during your legal battle. Barbara Smith, J.D., former district

The Smith Mediation Center provides an alternative to the contentious atmosphere
that often pervades legal actions. Mediators do not represent either party; rather,
they promote neutral guidance throughout the mediation process and allow parties
to maintain control of their situation, create nontraditional solutions within the
law, and keep specific issues private. Ms. Smith and the team at Smith Mediation
Center will work together to help create an environment where a mediated
resolution can be created as an alternative to traditional litigation.

accordance with appropriate judicial
procedures:'
The families of the three campers
have sought professional help to deal
with the impact of a devastating betray-
al by a trusted counselor in a presum-
ably safe environment.
"For our kids, some effects may be
visible now, some may not:' the father
said. "For all the people, like Judge
Cohn, who say the boys did not or may
not have known they were being pho-
tographed, that is irrelevant, as all the
kids knew at camp the day after Kuppe's
arrest that 'Matt the counselor was fired
for taking pictures in the locker room:
These are smart boys and, eventually,
the pieces will click into place for them:'
He said the parents have become
more cautious about choosing caregiv-
ers and deciding on future summer
camp experiences and other extra-
curricular activities. The situation has
placed additional stress on all the fam-
ily members.
"It's natural for parents to blame
each other or blame themselves when
something like this happens to a child,"
said Joe Kort, a psychotherapist at the
Center for Relationship and Sexual
Health in Rochester.
The parents say they have experi-
enced many sleepless nights, exac-
erbated by the uncertainty of future
repercussions for themselves and their
children.
"This has forever changed us as par-
ents:' said their spokesperson. "When
we woke up on Aug. 13, these boys were
our babies. By the end of the day, they
were 'the victims: Nothing can prepare
a parent for that:' *

and currently teaching Federation's
Melton program, Faudem is also an
active Akiva Hebrew Day School
parent.
"Rabbi Faudem has an excellent
reputation as an educator, connect-
ing to students across the denomi-
national spectrum," said Miriam
Starkman, HMD executive director.
"For the past few years she has
led successful monthly learning
sessions for female students thanks
to a grant from the Jewish Women's
Foundation, and we're excited for
the opportunity to expand her role
and impact at the six campuses that
HMD serves." *
